Kangaroo Island Holidays Guide

South Australia, Australia

kangaroo island holiday and accomodation guide

Kangaroo Island is a short flight or ferry ride from Cape Jervis, two hours south of Adelaide. Day and overnight tours are available to experience this unspoilt wonderland. Kangaroo Island was discovered in 1802 and soon after became Australia's first free settlement, with sealers, escaped convicts and runaway sailors making the island home. Today the island ranks as Australia's fourth major tourism icon due its abundant wildlife and stunning coastal scenery. Hang out with some friendly sea lions at the beach, or spot koalas, kangaroos and echidnas in their natural environment at Flinders Chase National Park.

Kingscotte is the main town with the ferry terminal and the majority of the islands accommodation and restaurants. It is a small sleepy town that thrives on tourism – each night Little Penguins come into Kingscotte to the safety of their nests along the shoreline.

Head to Vivonne Bay for a lunch of delectable local seafood, then in the afternoon visit the red lichen-topped rock formations of Remarkable Rocks. Take the board-walk down the cliff face at Admiral's Arch and watch the playful New Zealand fur seals frolic on the rocks below. Boat tours are available from the main town of Kingscotte and most stop off in a secluded bay to swim in the crystal clear aquamarine waters or for a snorkel to try to spot one of the famous 'leafy sea-dragons' endemic to the area., or if you’re lucky, a pod of dolphins. Half and full day fishing charters are also available.

Kangaroo Island has a temperate climate, with cool winters and dry, hot summers. The Kangaroo Island Art Feast in early October celebrates the island's exceptional food, wine and art at venues across Kangaroo Island.
