Barossa Valley Holidays Guide
South Australia, Australia
The Barossa Valle is a food and wine lover's paradise only one hour's drive north of Adelaide. The Barossa's fertile soils and Mediterranean climate produce some of Australia's most sought-after wines, as does the nearby picture-perfect Clare Valley. There are over 80 cellar doors in the region including the household names of Jacob's Creek, Yalumba and Peter Lehmann, and the lesser known but highly recommended Rockford, Charles Melton and Henshke. The vineyards are verdant green in summer, while in autumn the leaves change colour, and in winter the grapes are harvested, leaving the branches bare.

Angaston, the main town in the Barossa Valley, is a wonderful place to spend a few hours. You'll find all manner of gourmet produce, plus buzzing cafés and charming antique stores. There is a Farmer's Market here on Saturday mornings. One of Australia's most famous cooks, Maggie Beer, runs a Farm Shop near the town of Nurioopta, which is a must for tastings of her gourmet food range.
The Clare Valley to the north of the Barossa has its own special blend of magic, with winding country roads, rolling green vineyards and heritage towns. It has a quieter pace than the Barossa and is a great place to relax and unwind. Explore the many cellar doors, or in spring visit the conservation parks for stunning wild-flower displays. There are a number of popular walking trails in the area that will lead you past picturesque green fields to secluded picnic spots and world-class restaurants.
The Barossa and Clare Valleys have temperate climates, with cool winters and hot, dry summers. Access is via self-drive or bus tour from Adelaide. The Barossa Vintage Festival in April each year has over 120 events including cooking demonstrations, wine-tastings, jazz performances and the Vintage Festival Parade.
