beautiful coromandel holidays in new zealand

Located only a 90 minute drive or two hour ferry ride from Auckland, the Coromandel is regarded as one of New Zealand's favourite holiday spots, and has some of the nation's finest beaches and thermal springs. Hahei Beach has brilliant white sand and a charming seaside village with accommodation, restaurants and cafés. It is a great base to see the world famous 'Cathedral Cove', a much photographed white headland with a large walk-through cave, which was the location of the opening scenes of the movie Prince Caspian. The area is only accessible by foot or boat and there are many companies offering walking, cruising and kayaking tours of the area.

Another 'must-do' in the area is Hot Water Beach, where low tide reveals an underground river of hot water bubbling through the sand. Visitors flock to the area to dig their own thermal pools and relax in the beautiful surroundings. The white sandy beach is lined with the gnarled Pohutukawa trees famous throughout New Zealand. Nearby is the magical 'Lost Spring', a series of clear natural thermal springs surrounded by lush vegetation. There is a day spa on site which offers a variety of healing treatments. The 3 hour Pinnacles Walk follows the original footsteps of the kauri loggers and gold miners and traverses through spectacular forests and across rushing streams. There is an overnight stay option available.

Coromandel Town is a great place to base yourself for day tours of the area. The town has a unique historical feeling, with many pioneering buildings from the Gold Rush days still surviving. The town is known for its cafés and restaurants serving sumptuous local seafood, and there are many activities and attractions including swimming, diving, boat cruises, bush walks, fishing, art galleries and the Driving Creek Railway.
