United Kingdom Highlights

United Kingdom Holidays Guide

England is the biggest of the nations, and London one of the greatest cities anywhere. Tour around the famously pretty landscapes, and see some spectacular castles and stately homes. Scotland is the least populated and has the best scenery; try combining a stay in one of the cities with a visit to the Highlands and Islands. Wales has numerous seaside resorts and mountains. Dublin has excellent nightlife, and Ireland as a whole is a hot destination for both its culture and countryside. Northern Ireland has been off the tourist map in the past, but is now increasingly popular.

You’re likely to start by checking out the museums, galleries and sights in London. The historic cities of Nottingham, York and Chester are lovely, and are popular weekend destinations for locals and foreign holidaymakers alike, and the Lake District is another favourite destination. If you’re interested in castles, then Wales is probably your best option. Scotland is excellent for walking and adventure sports; the West Coast of Scotland is another highlight – try getting a ferry to Mull or Skye. The North of Wales, with its mixture of mountains and seaside resorts, is perfect for families. Ireland is a vibrant and slightly quirky country, and its towns and cities are hugely enjoyable, as well as its beautiful countryside.

Popular United Kingdom Holiday Destinations

If you want to party, then the great post-industrial cities have some excellent nightlife – Manchester and Liverpool are famous for their contributions to popular music. If the idea of a bangin’ nightlife is far from appealing, then provincial towns manage to combine small-town charm with a range of eating out options and one or two historical sights, and you’ll be close to the main cities without all of the noise of staying in one – Perth, Carlisle, Appleby and Kinsale are all suitable bases for camping or self catering holidays, which are the most cost-effective way to see what can be quite a pricey region.

Places to Visit

Sleeper trains operate between London and Scotland; these can be a very good way to head north. Internal flights are also popular. Both these options should be booked well in advance, though.
