There are many hundreds of castles in the U.K, each with its own story to tell and place in history. Perhaps the most obvious is the Tower of London. Famously built by William the Conqueror around 1080 and equally as famous for housing the ‘Royal Crown Jewels’. Depending on the time of year you are visiting each will have its own special events from jousting, to re-enactments of its own individual history, but all will have mazes, traditional tea rooms all set in stunning grounds. Impressive castles surrounded by beautiful gardens like Warwick Castle, Edinburgh Castle in Scotland, Leeds Castle in the southeast and the stunning Pembroke Castle in Wales will not disappoint even the hardest to please.

UK Castles

Windsor Castle, just outside of London, is Her Majesty the Queen’s official residence and the oldest inhabited castle in the world. If you are visiting when the Queen is in residence you may get to see the spectacular ‘changing of the guard’. Dover Castle, on the southeast coast, a medieval fortress, sitting on the famous ‘white cliffs’, has its own secret wartime tunnels. Take a guided tour through these magnificent tunnels whilst being told of its history right back to 1160 when it was first built. Lesser known Castle Howard in York, northern England, lies in a spectacular 1000 acres setting between two lakes and has some of the prettiest landscaped gardens with fountains and statues.
