Located on the south-western tip of New Zealand's South Island, Fiordland is a place of breathtaking beauty. It is the location of one of New Zealand's most popular attractions, Milford Sound, one of the world's greatest natural wonders. Here you'll find tall mountains standing straight out of the sea, with luxuriant rainforest clinging to their sheer walls, and waterfalls cascading hundreds of metres into the sea. Marine life thrives here, and you may spot bottlenose dolphins, fur seals and penguins. The Maori people believe that this landscape was created by the god Tu Te Raki Whanoa, and you'll be inspired by the spiritual nature of the region.

The gateway to the region is the picturesque town of Te Anau, located on the lake of the same name. There are a number of other fiords in the area, including the much larger Doubtful Sound, however Milford Sound is the only one accessible by road. There are a variety of cruise operators, with overnight options available, or for a more intimate experience, try a kayaking tour. It's advisable to book ahead in the peak summer months of December to February.

The Milford Track, a four-day hike, is regarded as one of the world's best walking trips. Visitor numbers are restricted and accommodation must be reserved.

It is a 3 hour drive from Queenstown to Te Anau, and then a further 2 hours 20 min drive to Milford Sound. There is no land accommodation at Milford Sound, however overnight boat cruises are available.
