This somewhat overlooked island and is surrounded by the warm waters of the Gulf Stream. Untouched until the 1950s when an American millionaire built a tax-free port, this 85-mile-long isleis visited by close to one million tourists a year, but is nowhere near as glitzy or busy as Nassau. Freeport is the major city on the island, Lucaya is a tourist destination and home to many hotels and restaurants. West End, the oldest town on the island and its capital, was notorious as a rum-running port during the American prohibition days.

Grand Bahama Travel Info

The Grand Bahama International Airport in Freeport on the western end of the island is the largest airport. If you cannot find convenient flights directly there, we suggest you fly into either Nassau, or Miami or Fort Lauderdale, Florida and then catch a commuter flight to Freeport. To get around Grand Bahama you can rent a bike, a scooter, or a car/jeep. Or you can take the local public bus and mingle with the locals. Taxis are always an option, but know how much you will be paying before you get it, including per mile and per person charges.
