You may not have heard of Agra itself, but you'll definitely have heard of the Taj Mahal, which is the city's main attraction. The Taj Mahal was built by a Moghul Emporer in memory of his wife, and is one of the most beautiful buildings on Earth. The Taj itself is a beautiful and ornate building, surrounded by extensive and well-manicured gardens and other, smaller, buildings of interest. No trip to India is complete without a visit. In addition to the main attraction, there are numerous other places to see around Agra, and you could easily spend a week here touring around.

Agra – Regions or Cities to Visit

The other main sight to see in Agra is the city's fort, which was built in the 16th century and is extremely well preserved. It also has an excellent view of the Taj Mahal. The tomb complex at Sikander is also well worth a visit – there are separate gates for Muslim, Hindu and Christian areas of the site, as well as a special gate for Akhbar, one of the region's rules – his tomb has an incredibly ornate antechamber. There are several other tombs of note in Agra, and gardens and temples. Visit the bazaar to haggle for locally crafted items, including goods made of stone and leather.

Agra doesn’t have a huge amount in the way of nightlife, but there are several good restaurants, and many hotels put on cultural shows in the evenings. There is a wide range of accommodation in Agra, and you should be able to find something to suit your budget. Outside of the city are several places you can visit on easy day trips. These include Fatepur Sihkri, the former capital of the Moghul Empire, the temples at Mathura, and the bird sanctuary and Bharatpur. You’re unlikely to want to spend your entire Indian holiday to Agra, but it’s an excellent place to stay for a few days.
