Few people realize that Sacramento is the capital of California, and as the seat of the capital, has the state capitol buildings. It was also once the site of the California Gold Rush, the largest migration in human history, when 300 000 people came to California from other parts of the United States and other parts of the world because gold was found in neighbouring Coloma in 1848. The Gold Rush lasted until 1855.

Today, you can visit the Old Sacramento State Historic Park, a part of Sacramento that preserves the appearance of the town as it must have looked during the mid-19th century; you can ride in a horse drawn carriage or stroll the area. There is also the California State Railroad Museum that revisits the impact of the railroad on the state. It has several old locomotives on site plus the museum operates the Sacramento Southern Railroad, a six mile railway journey that takes you along the Sacramento River. Some festivals celebrated in Old Sacramento that you may want to schedule into your vacation planner include Gold Rush Days, New Year's Eve, Mardi Gras, and the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee.

Lake Tahoe at almost 1900 m in elevation is a beautiful glacial lake where during the spring to early fall visitors can hike and bicycle around the lake on the Tahoe Rim Trail or the Eagle Lake Trailhead. For mountain biking, there is the world famous Flume trail. For others, they may be interested in paddle boarding, jet skiing, and kayaking on the lake. For scuba divers, there are some spectacular underwater vistas, but due to the high altitude of the lake, it is recommended for experienced divers only due to the risk of decompression sickness.

Of course, during the winter, there are numerous ski resorts around Lake Tahoe to visit including Heavenloy Mountain Resort, Squaw Valley, Northstar, and Boreal Mountain. Other winter sports you may want to try out include snow tubing, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing.
