Highlights for a Skiing Holiday in America

In Colorado, you can go skiing in the Rocky Mountains – some of the tallest peaks in the range are found in this state, and there are nearly thirty skiing resorts for you to try. Most resorts are less than two hours away from Colorado, where it's likely that you'll land. Breckenridge is one of the most famous, most popular, most developed and easily accessible resorts – as well as skiing and snowboarding, there are numerous other activities available. The Sunlight Mountain resort caters to budget skiers and beginners. The Araphoe Basin has quite a relaxed scene and is popular with locals. Snowmobiling is also a popular pursuit, particularly around Glenwood Springs.

Chile's geographical situation means that it's ideal for skiing holidays – in fact, you'll find some of the best skiing on the continent here. Valle Nevado is a classy destination, with some of the best slopes in the country – heli-skiing is available, and there are particularly good facilities for snowboarders, including a super half-pipe. La Parva is another top Chilean resort, where you can admire the panoramic views. Go to El Colorado if you're a beginner or young person, or want your children to learn to ski – there are ski schools for everyone in this resort. Something to bear in mind is that Chile has a long coast and isn't very wide – its apparently possible to go skiing in the morning and spend an afternoon at the beach!

Argentina's main ski region is the Andes. Las Lenas is one of the main skiing areas,, and the other is San Carlos de Bariloche. Around the latter, Cero Catedral is the most developed ski resort in Argentina, and possibly the best generally.It has guaranteed snow and there are over sixty ski runs, so you're bound to find one that fits your level of expertise – you can also try ice-skating on the frozen lakes, snowboarding and hiking. Cerro Castor, near the world's most southern city, Ushuaia, is another top ski resort, with amazing slopes and a ski school.

Canada has some of the best skiing in North America. Whistler Backcomb, near Vancouver, hosted the 2010 Winter Olympics and has some top class facilities. In additional to skiing on Whistler and Backcomb, there are a range of other activities including snow hiking, sleigh rides, snowmobiling, snow-shoe walks, tubing and heli-skiing. There's also a zip-slide adventure course, where you can see some fantastic views over the snow-covered mountains and forests. For non-outdoorsy types, there's a spa, a wine and food tour, an extensive après-ski scene with numerous bars, restaurants, discos and nightclubs. You'll have a great time, and possibly sleep in for your skiing lesson the next day.
