Luxury Holidays in America

Las Vegas is an excellent choice for a luxury vacation. You'll appreciate a hotel with a swimming pool when you're in hot Arizona, and the chance to enjoy spa treatments and other luxuries. This being Vegas, the hotels often have on-site gaming and casino complexes, meaning that you won't have far to walk after a late-night gambling session. If you're there for the entertainment rather than the chance for a big win, then pick a luxury hotel with its own concert venue – some book acts to play poolside gigs. If you've got the budget, then you'll also be able to enjoy the best of Vegas' shows.

Chile, particularly Santiago, is a fabulous luxury destination, and may be better value than other, comparable destinations. There's a certainly a lot to do within a relatively compact area – there are both ski and beach resorts within easy distance. Vina del Mar is the largest of the latter, and has a thriving cultural scene. Santiago has many luxury hotels within the city, some with their own private pools and a range of restaurants – and you can also arrange a classy wine tasting experience with a top sommelier and some of the country's finest wines. If you'd prefer to stay outside, then San Alfonso del Mar has the world's largest swimming pool, as well as a private beach.

Long Island has some of the most expensive properties in the US, and the Hamptons in particular are playgrounds for the rich and famous. So it's a great place to enjoy a luxury holiday. However, you can forget about mass-touristy resorts – small luxury inns or holiday houses are the order of the day. There are a number of sights of historical interest, but also beaches, art galleries and some high-end country clubs and golf courses. The Hamptons are within easy travelling distance of New York, so you can combine a luxury beach break with trips into one of the world's greatest cities.

Brazil has some incredible luxury accommodation. Ouro Preto used to be the country's most influential town, but is now a beautiful and peaceful city with some amazing Baroque architecture. There are numerous museums, galleries and churches to see, and luxurious accommodation in historic buildings. If you'd prefer something a bit livelier, then head to Rio de Janeiro. Here you can attend the Carnival, if you arrive at the right time of year, learn to samba from a master and try some sushi – Brazil has a high number of Japanese restaurants so upmarket and authentic places abound. Brazil is the host for the 2014 football world cup – book early if you want to stay in style! Zona Sul has some of the poshest hotels, and Ipanema beach.

Mexico has plenty of luxury resorts, but Acapulco is the original and arguably classiest holiday town. You can see cliff divers doing death-defying leaps into the water, and sail to the beautiful Isla de la Roqueta in a glass bottomed boat – enjoy a picnic and sunbathing when you get there. There's plenty of luxurious accommodation where every comfort imaginable is available. You can also party with Mexico's smart set at the high-end nightclubs, although you'll need to look the part to get in.
