Brazil is probably best known throughout the world for its all-out approach to Carnival, held immediately before Lent. Many of the parades are led by fantastically costumed representatives of samba schools, and the parade and carnival itself is heavily influenced by African-Brazilian culture.

Trekking, snorkelling, and diving are just some activities you may want to undertake while you're here. For the more urban-oriented traveller, there are plenty of beautiful and fun-loving cities to visit on your trip and plenty of sights to see.

Brazil Holidays Planner

If you are interested in trekking, there are many choices for you in Brazil. In the north, you can explore the extensive Amazon rainforest by foot on a guided excursion. You will have the opportunity to see animals like monkeys, sloths, tapirs, and caimans. Every night you will eat under the stars and sleep in a hammock. You can arrange your tour, whether by foot or by boat through outfitters in Manaus.

In the south, you can trek in the mountainous region and see alpine meadows and wildlife. You can also visit one of the Seven Wonders of the World, Iguacu Falls, made up of 275 individual waterfalls and dominated by the Devil's Throat, a massive waterfall that is one and a half times the height of Niagara Falls. If you don't want to trek to the falls, you can charter a plane to fly you there.

For access to hidden and remote beaches that are less touristed, you may want to trek the Florianopolis region with its numerous trails. Some of these beaches can only be reached by trails, and once there you'll have unlimited access to sun and surf.

You can explore fantastic diving in coastal Brazil in the protected marine park in areas like the island of Fernando de Noronha. For hang-gliding, you can go to the cliff-tops of Pedra Bonita just outside Rio, and for other caving, diving, and rafting opportunities, you can explore parks like Diamantina National Park.

For an urban adventure, you may want to visit the lovely city of Sao Luis along the northern coast of Brazil with its particularly picturesque blend of Colonial architecture or the frisky yet ancient city of Salvador da Bahia along the central coast with similarly beautiful architecture. In the heart of the country, Brasilia offers one architect's vision of the future, Oscar Niemeyer designed several buildings that reflected his special vision. Rio de Janeiro with the spectacle of Christ the Redeemer overlooking the environs from its perch on Corcovado Mountain also has a lot to offer the dedicated urbanite.

Brazil Accommodation Guide
