Free State Holidays
South Africa, Africa
The Highveld region of South Africa is a high-altitude geographical region, which includes dry, flat plains, amazing mountain passes and gorges covered with lush forests, and scrubland and bushes where you’ll find some of the country’s best game reserves. The Highveld includes Gauteng Region and head to Kruger National Park – but there’s much more to see in South Africa’s high country. As well as game reserves, there are many sites of interest to those interested in history. There are opportunities for adventure excursions, hiking, fishing and buying crafts, and numerous sights to break up the long drives that are a feature of any South African road trip.

What to Do in Free State
One of the highlights of any visit to Mplumalanga is a trip to the Blyde River Canyon, a beautiful valley where you can hike and hopefully catch a glimpse on wildlife. It makes an excellent stop-off on the road to Kruger, although you could easily spend much longer here, enjoying the campsite and the amazing views. Sun City is a tourist highlight of a different kind – in the old days, it used to be the few places in South Africa where gambling was allowed. Now it’s a theme park with an aqua park, a kitschy but impressive Palace of the Lost City, which is vaguely based on King Solomon’s Mines, and two very good golf courses. Pilanesberg National Park is nearby, and the easiest park containing the Big Five to reach from Gauteng.
Where to Stay in Free State
Long Tom Pass is named after a type of cannon used in the Boer War. It’s a spectacular road, with plenty of switchbacks and sheer drops – you can still see the damage caused by the cannons. Further south, you’ll travel the Free State if you’re driving between Joburg and the Cape. The Golden Gate National Park has amazing scenery, while history buffs should visit the museums in Bloemfontein. The Highveld is the Afrikaans homeland – don’t miss a traditional fry up, which usually features steak as well as enough other forms of protein to keep you going until the next day and beyond… or at least the evening’s meat-laden braai!
