The Gambia is almost entirely surrounded by Senegal, and is a valley that surrounds the lower region of the Gambia River. The Gambia is safe, stable and friendly and has an excellent climate; it’s very popular with package tourists from Europe. The Gambia was briefly part of the much larger Senegal. Senegal is more varied in climate and topography, and has several large cities. Senegal has had a troubled recent past, and you should check travel advice before heading there. It’s popular with backpackers – and the famous Paris to Dakar rally finishes there.
What to Do in Senegal Africa
Much of the tourism in the region is based around the Atlantic Coast of the Gambia. Banjul, the capital of the Gambia, has the main airport; cultural sights are few compared to beach bars, but there is a small National Museum. Serrekunda is the Gambia’s biggest town and worth visiting for its bustling markets. Dakar has more to see than either; the African Renaissance Monument is an enormous statue meant to represent African hope, although ironically is a Stalinist-esque structure made in North Korea. Goree Island has a former slave station and a beach. You should also take a trip to one of Dakar’s markets; the biggest is the Marche Sandaga.
Senegal Holidays Guide
If you’re going to the Gambia as part of a package tour, then you’re likely to have an excellent beach – and, in fact, everything you’ll need to enjoy a laid back holiday – at your fingertips. If you’re travelling around, then the best way to do so is to take a boat trip up the Gambia River. Senegal has some excellent National Parks – the best known of this is Niokolo-Koba, which has hippos, lions and crocodiles. Saint Louis, the former capital, is particularly popular with French tourists and has beautiful colonial architecture, a lively nightlife and several nearby bird sanctuaries.
