The Lomaiviti Islands lies off the east coast of Viti Levu. It is a mix of small coral atolls (a few with small resorts or backpacker hang-outs) and larger volcanic islands and is a quieter alternative to the Yasawa Group in the west of the country. Historic Levuka Town on Ovalau in the Lomaiviti Group is a popular centre for eco-tourism and has many historical sights from the colonial era when it was Fiji's capital. Levuka is surrounded by lush tropical mountains, there are several good hikes and natural swimming pools.
